End Of December 2010 Traffic Report - 40.8% Increase Year on Year

What is PG?By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Just a quick look at the end of December 2010 traffic, numbers, and statistics. I'm glad to say we saw more than 100,000 unique visitors for every month this year - the first time that's happened. In December 2010 we saw 113,615 unique visitors, an increase of 40.8% when compared to December 2009, when we saw 80,654 uniques. You can clearly see the effect of the "Wild Bill Anomaly" on the chart below in July and August this year. I'm not going to belabor the issue too much - as time goes by I spend less and less time worrying about and studying website traffic. The answer for advertisers is simple - I'm seeing more traffic now than I was then - and that's always been true. Anyway, I'm happy with the 40% increase over December last year. Speaking of which, Happy New Year everyone.

Tips and Donations to Panama-Guide via PayPal

What is PG?By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Today someone suggested that I should put a "tip jar" on the website somewhere; "Just an opinion - you should put in a tip jar with pay pal. Might be surprised by a tip or two. Thanks for all your hard work here. Was there for years, but now am out of Panama a lot and it's even more appreciated." OK, why not? If you would like to give us a tip or make a donation please feel free to send via PayPal to the email address don@panama-guide.com - and thank you very much. And what's more, if you leave a tip or make a donation with a comment I'll put that up on the website as well, with our thanks. And before someone else thinks of it, I just want to say for the record that "Merry Christmas, you sanctimonious bastard" has already been taken... (grin)

Random Link Submissions To The Website - Nice Try

What is PG? By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - About once or twice a week someone submits a new link to the "Links" section of the website. However, I only accept links from those websites who link back to us - as in a link exchange. Also, I only accept links from websites with English language content, from websites and businesses that are either based in or about the Republic of Panama. Meaning - random worldwide casino sites (or whatever) don't qualify. Anyway, if you would like to participate in our long standing Link Exchange Program then please hit that link, comply with the easy and simple requirements, and let me know. Otherwise, don't waste your time submitting random links via the submission tool, 'cuz they won't go up. Also, don't be afraid to "pester" me if you've submitted your website and I don't get to it immediately, just fire off a friendly reminder and I'll get to it. Have a wonderful day...

Now More Than 13,000 Articles Published on Panama-Guide

What is PG?By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Just in case you didn't notice on the top of the website, there are now more than 13,000 articles published on this website. We follow the news every day and highlight those issues of interest to the members of the English speaking community of expatriates in the Republic of Panama. During 2010 we have averaged 221 articles per month - sometimes more and sometimes less, depending on what's going on. Anyway, I always try to highlight these kinds of milestones just to blow our own horn a little (toot, toot).

Spanish Language in Comments

What is PG?By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Lately a few people have posted comments to the website in Spanish. Sometimes it's Panamanians, or someone posting the contents of a law or article or something that appears in Spanish. If there is no translation provided, I won't put those up, even if the information is correct and relevant. So, if you want to post something in Spanish, please provide a translation to English as well. Thanks.

End of October 2010 Traffic Report - Still Growing Nicely

What is PG?By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - October 2010 was another excellent month for website traffic. As you might know by now, I spend less and less time looking at stats and traffic numbers as time goes by. As long as there is a healthy and steady growth over the long term, I'm happy. This month we saw a 36% growth in traffic compared to October 2009 which is fine. We are now regularly seeing well over 100,000 unique visitors per month, and this month, which I consider to be a return to "normal" after the Wild Bill anomaly - we had more than 125,000 unique visitors compared to about 92,000 in October 2009 - so that's good. Also the ratios have stayed about the same. Meaning, on average during the month each unique visitor makes about two visits (250,000) and during each visit the average reader looks at about ten articles (2.5 million). Whatever. More traffic is better, as long as the quality of the content remains high. Right, you know, like perfeshional...

Panama-Guide.com - Unity With Panamanian Media

What is PG? By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - The recent decision by the Second Superior Tribunal against the news director of TVN Channel 2, Sabrina Bacal and journalist Justino González is extremely worrisome. I believe there are cases and situations in which irresponsible and unscrupulous people can exploit the media to criminally slander or defame individuals. I myself have been the target of silly and childish outbursts, most recently by Jerry Ray Hall, who remains upset about my reporting on his exploits in Panama during his bid to win a seat in the US congress in Texas. The actions he took against me after the fact are childish, irresponsible, and criminal, and for that he will eventually be held responsible. However the TVN reporters simply covered a breaking news story, reported the facts as they became available, and did so in a professional and responsible manner. In short, they were doing their jobs. What's more, there is a connection and a political link between these cases and another pending case against commentator Juan Carlos Tapia. I think that all of these issues will be worked out eventually, however it is troubling to think that the President of Panama - Ricardo Martinelli - who has already accumulated an amazing amount of political power in this country - would allow his employees to conduct themselves in this manner. Freedom of expression and freedom of the press are one of primary ways of defending democracy. A guy like Hugo Chavez shuts down media outlets when he doesn't like what they are saying. Manuel Antonio Noriega would raid and destroy the offices of newspapers and jail journalists who spoke out against him. Does the administration of Ricardo Martinelli want to be compared with those two guys? I think not. And if Martinelli says "I didn't know" I can believe that, which is why he immediately issued the pardon. However, his people knew what was going on - they pulled the strings from a distance - and THEY should he held responsible for their mistakes. In any case, we here at Panama-Guide.com stand in solidarity with the protests taking place today against this decision.

Traffic Report - End of September 2010 - Back to Normal

What is PG?By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Things are starting to return to normal somewhat around here after the whole "Wild Bill" event of July and August. From my point of view what matters most is steady and sustainable growth in traffic to the website over a long period of time. I have always had a healthy strategic outlook in this respect, and in September 2010 we returned to something more in line with our normal traffic growth patterns. Panama-Guide.com has been in online for more than six years now, and there have been a few other "anomalies" in the past which have caused both temporary surges and decreases in traffic, but sooner or later those events come to an end, and traffic patterns return to normal.

26% Growth - Year on Year: In September 2010 we saw an increase of 26% when compared to September 2009, a growth rate that has been fairly standard for this website since its inception. The angle of the green line below is always pretty much the same, and that's good enough for me. This month we delivered 1.9 million articles to the computer monitors of our readers. Anyway, it's all good...
