By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Martín Torrijos said technology is an ambitious tool to fight poverty and to elevate the living conditions of citizens, but governments have to exchange ideas and successful experiences in the field of social sciences and concentrate less on the differences between nations. This Friday in Miami while speaking to governmental and business leaders attending the economic forum organized by the Microsoft Corporation, Torrijos shared the positive results the application of technology in governmental management has meant for Panama to benefit the population, specially to most vulnerable and poor. "I can say that Panama not only exhibits important economic achievements, but in social improvements as well. To formula is simple; to take the most modern services to the most remote areas," he said. He pointed out that in the last three years the economic growth in Panama has been impressive, averaging 9% growth and obtaining an 11.2% growth rate in 2007, the highest in Latin America and one of the highest in the world. In addition he emphasized how unemployment in Panama has dropped during those same three years from 11.8% to 6.4%. "My country accepts the challenge of the innovation in global competition, and invites Microsoft and other corporations to support to Panama, Latin America and the Caribbean, in shortening the breach of knowledge generations", he concluded.

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - This morning at about 10:00 am or so there was an electrical fire in an underground junction box right across the street from the Veneto hotel. The firemen showed up and the power company cut the juice. There are several significant underground cables sharing that particular space, including electrical power, local telephone, fiber optic, as well as the main line for Cable Onda. The guys from the power company didn't get done until after 7:00 pm and then Cable Onda got their shot in the hole and patched the damage. Long story short - I was offline all day today. In any case, it's fixed. Yahoo, and Google, and everything else.

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Like a Zombie from the "Night of the Living Dead" Okke Ornstein has returned. Ornstein took his "Noriegaville" website off line a few months ago and was supposedly gone for good. He used his website to actively and habitually slander and defame other members of the English speaking community in Panama. In my book if you're going publicly allege someone is a pedophile then you damn well better have some solid proof or a copy of a conviction in your hands. Ornstein made that very public and incredibly irresponsible accusation against another member of the community simply because the guy is a friend of mine. I tried to ignore his obsessive rants for more than three years but then he crossed the line. As a result myself and others filed a series of criminal complaints against him for defamation and slander, all of which are still pending in the Panamanian legal system. In response he took his Noriegaville website offline in a legally defensive move. Well guess what? He's back, just like a bad burrito... (more)

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Earlier this week I spoke to Ing. Virgilio Sanchez, the new Director of the Department of Information for the Panamanian National Assembly regarding the recent hacker attack which took their website offline on 9 January 2008. According to Sanchez, they are conducting a forensic evaluation of the attack, and have concluded that the attackers entered the site on several occasions prior to 9 January 2008 primarily to ensure they could access the server anytime they wanted. Sanchez said that the internal email and document servers for the National Assembly were never compromised, and that the hackers did not have access to sensitive National Assembly documents or information. By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Inside sources speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed to Panama-Guide computer technicians responsible for the security of the internal information systems serving Panama's National Assembly had warned of potential security weaknesses in their systems. Specifically, computer security specialists warned officials in the National Assembly twice in 2007 and once in 2006 that their systems were extremely vulnerable, primarily because two program security updates and patches had not been installed. In addition, they were told there was not enough isolation between their computer server and the rest of their internal information system. (more)

By Edgar Enrique Figueroa for La Prensa - "Our eyes are on you" and the US flag was what appeared on the web page of the National Assembly indicating that the page had been attacked by hackers last 9 January at 9:30 pm. The phrase and the American flag are a key signal indicating hackers have penetrated the site, said Jose Rodriguez, am expert in security systems who is dedicated to this business. As a result of the attack the web page of the National Assembly www.asemblea.gob.pa remains out of service, one of the sites most visited among all of the Panamanian governmental web sites, according to the National Secretariat of Science and Technology (Senacyt). Pedro Miguel Gonzalez in Custody
By Santiago Cumbrera for the Panama America - The web page of Panama's National Assembly has been down since 9 January 2008, when on the day Panamanians commemorate Martyr's Day (1964), a group of cybernetic pirates (hackers) broke into the site and placed a US flag. The company providing web service to the National Assembly continues to investigate the attack and has not discarded the possibility that the attack originated from overseas. Nevertheless, legislative sources refused to comment when asked if the attack could have come from sectors of the US government who are annoyed because of the controversy surrounding the President of the Panamanian National Assembly Pedro Miguel Gonzalez. The election of González irritated the United States, who has been indicted for the terrorist murder of US soldier Zak Hernandez, who was killed on the eve of a visit to Panama by then US president George Bush (father) in 1992. Hackers broke into the web page and placed a US flag on the site, and below wrote the message "Our eyes are on you."
