Varela States He Has Nothing To Do With Lavitola's Case

Professional ServicesThe Vice President, Juan Carlos Varela, denied he was involved in the case of Valter Lavitola.

Varela said he may be in the picture, because he went to receive an Italian government official; however, his name is not on any record or document related to this case.

About his relationship with the former president, Mireya Moscoso, Varela said the Panameñismo Political Party is a democratic group in which they respect the opinions of all its members.

"I am not in politics for the opinion of a single person, but for the future of four million Panamanians," he said.

He also referred to the party hosted by the President of the Assembly, Sergio Gálvez. Varela said Panama does not deserve this kind of politics, because the funds come from Panamanians, and they must be used for the benefit of the people. "Instead of spending public funds we should increase the income of the population," he said.

He said one of his main missions if he becomes President of the Republic will be fighting against corruption.

According to Varela, the alliance between CD and his party came after the government’s agenda was changing its initial path. Regarding his relationship with President Martinelli, he said he first met him as a businessman. (TVN)

Knowledge Given To Producers To Export To The Caribbean

Professional ServicesAbout 65 small and medium producers of Chiriquí analyzed the conditions to export their crops to markets in the Caribbean and in the Dominican Republic, as part of the project to develop the office of Export Promotion, in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MICI).

Irma Chong, from the Office of Export Promotion of the MICI, said they gave farmers and industries all knowledge which can be applied in the 'Platform Agro-exportations' in order to export their production.

She said the training aims for producers to know export logistics, market analysis, management of international prices, certifications, international standards and contract negotiation.

"The idea is for many of the producers to know about the operating costs of exports and they can sell their crops directly and gain more credits," she said. (TVN)

Transit Authority Seeks To Place Billing Rates For Crane Service

Professional ServicesAnnouncing the changes of traffic regulations as transfer, storage and custody of detained vehicles was the subject for which the meeting took place between the Transit Authority and the National Business owners of the nationwide Crane service.

Arturo Araúz, deputy director of the Transit Authority, said he did not seek to arbitrarily make a decision and this is why the issue will be consulted with the owners.

He said the other topics discussed were to establish a payment rate across the country, which ranges from $ 75, since there are complaints from drivers of the service.

He said possibly, in late July, there could be a consensus document on the subject. (Panama America)

La Casa de Baterias "Guarantee" comes with strings

Professional ServicesCAVEAT EMPTOR: I purchased a brand new battery from La Casa de Baterias, four months and 1 week ago. I have purchased at least four batteries from this company so far, mainly because of the convenience (they come to you) and the guarantee. This is the first time I have tried to use the guarantee. And now they say that I need to pay over $16 for them to come out to "examine" the battery. Or I could come to them, but of course, I would have to jump the battery to do so. Not much of a guarantee, if you ask me. I just wanted to share my story with others. I certainly won't give La Casa de Baterias any more of my business!

Editor's Comment: Just to get this straight - if you can get your car running, you can go to the Casa de las Baterias, and they will replace the battery free of charge. They only want to charge you the $16 bucks for a service call. Sorry dude, but that seems fair to me. Also, they have to determine why the battery died. Was the battery at fault, or is your car broke? If the alternator is not properly charging the battery, then you can swap batteries all day long and it won't fix your problem. My opinion, for what it's worth. I use these guys all the time, and there's no better service in Panama. Panama's hot tropical environment is particularly "tough" on batteries and they tend to die sooner that you might expect. You might decide to not give the Casa de Baterias any more of your business, but where else are you going to go?

Draft of Tax Information Exchange Agreement Between the US and Panama

Professional Services By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Last Friday a friend sent me a copy of the proposed agreement on "Fiscal Cooperation and Exchange of Information With Respect to Taxes" between the United States and Panama. I just got around to translating the document this morning, which was sent to me in Spanish, the original of the copy sent to me obtained from a Panamanian source. Interestingly enough, when I ran the thing through a machine translator something very unusual happened - I practically didn't have to change a thing. I translate Spanish news articles to English all day long, and I can tell when something was written by a Panamanian. This agreement was written by representatives of the government of the the United States in English, translated to Spanish, and then presented to the Panamanians for signature. That means this is something the US is stuffing down the Panamanian's throats. Panama is supposed to sign this thing tomorrow. If they do, there is no more "secrecy" or "privacy" in Panama. Personally, I don't have a thing to worry about because I'm friggin' broke and I'm not hiding anything from the US government or the IRS. However, I know there are a lot of people out there, members of the English speaking community of expatriates living in the Republic of Panama, who have gone to great lengths to take advantage of every available legal mechanism and privacy protection formerly available. If Panama signs this agreement tomorrow, you dudes are screwed. Oh, and one more thing - it's already too late to move your shit... (more)

Anyway, if you've got stuff, and if you need a place to stuff it, these guys can give you a place... (grin). And of course, if you have a website with English language content and you're not swapping links with us, then you should be.

"Otto" On Petaqilla and Me on Judicial Security in Panama

Professional Services

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - It's simply amazing the lengths some people will go. Some blogger going by the tag of "Otto" who refuses to use his real name or identify himself has decided to attack both me and the Petaquilla gold mining project in Panama. He claims they are lying about their intentions to start production in the month of December. The primary reason (he says) is that there are some 40 additional line items the company will have to comply with as part of the recently issued Environmental Impact Study issued by ANAM before they can begin production. But this guy represents a dangerous mix of being able to sound smart, just so long as no one checks out what he's saying. I took ten seconds to check just one of his claims and found him to be full of crap. (more)

Overseas Assistance - Structuring Foreigners in Panama

Professional Services Chances are if you’re browsing this website you are already interested in moving yourself and your money down to Panama, keeping a safe distance between you and the carnage that will likely ensue resulting from the collapse of the financial order as we know it. To say these are uncertain times is not only trite but understated. Rome is burning, and regardless of what happens in the elections, things are not going to be looking up anytime soon; Europe and North America face nearly impossible challenges—multi-trillion dollar bailouts, rising social spending costs, and a reduction in the tax-paying work force due to the global recession… those relatively few income producers who are remaining will likely be forced to fork over an increasingly larger portion of their wages to the federal government, the same group of rocket scientists that couldn’t manage to deliver bottles of water to hurricane-ravaged New Orleans in 2005. At Overseas Assistance, we are predicting rough waters ahead that will tighten the noose around the personal finances of North America’s middle and upper class. The time to strongly consider retirement or relocation to the private, tropical paradise of Panama is upon us, and the window of opportunity may be closing soon. (more)

Cable & Wireless Panama Makes $21 Million Dividend Payment to the Goverment of Panama

Professional Services The General Manager and Executive President of Cable & Wireless Panama S.A., Jorge Nicolau, handed a check for more than $21.5 million dollars ($21,532,968.95) to the government of Panama as owner of 49% of the company. Employees of the company, who own 2% of the shares, received a payment of $878,896.69 as payment for their share of dividends and accumulated earnings of the company through 31 December 2006. Alvaro - The Best Mechanic in Panama

Professional Services One of my best-kept secrets in Panama is Alvaro. He's a very good and much more than competent mechanic who will either fix your car or find someone who can if he runs into something that's beyond his capabilities. You really should write this down and stick it in your wallet. He has two cell phone numbers, his "old" number is 6-593-8844 and his "new" number is 6-634-8101. He answers both of them so you can use either one to get in touch with him. He is bilingual, has years of experience working in the former canal zone and knows how to take care of his customers. He has a rolling garage in the back of his mini-van with enough tools and equipment to get you running again no matter where you are if your car breaks down on the side of the road somewhere, at least enough to limp back to his shop. And the most important part is that he's honest to a fault. This man will not rip you off, and I think he's physically incapable of telling a lie. And if you've got squeaky brakes or something you've been putting off to get fixed, now (a couple of weeks before Christmas) would be a good time to get it taken care of and you'll be throwing some work to a good man. Tell him "Mr. Don" sent you, and he will hook you up.

Fire Insurance Coverage for Apartment Contents

Professional Services by Kevin Bradley: Panama has very reasonable Homeowners protection to cover the contents of your residence for Fire, Theft, Liability and more. In Panama, we insure the building and the contents under separate policies. We recommend that you insure a portion of the contents under a homeowner´s multirisk policy. This policy will include coverage for fire, theft, explosion, earthquake, hurricane or windstorm, flood, smoke and water damages. It will also cover your electronic equipment (% of the basic sum insured); theft (% of the basic sum insured); assault (up to $250.00 cash); breakage of windows; general liability up to $100,000.00 and ambulance service. Fire legal liability is also a provided for damage sustained by your neighbors from a fire originating in your residence. Claims are paid based on a "depreciated value" of the item insured. I encourage you to save your receipts or proof of purchase certificates, in case of a claim. I have had experience where a friendly adjustor will just tell my client to go out and buy the same TV, Radio etc. that was stolen or damaged.

Living An Authentic Life

Professional ServicesWhat do I want to do with my life? This is the hardest question to answer, yet it is the most important answer in any person’s life. This question is commonly phrased, “What should I do with my life?” It is generally answered in the voices of your family, teachers and social circle. In other words, all the folk who know exactly what you should do with your life. Their voices imply that you must live-up to certain standards. The trouble is, those standards are not your own. When you answer this question, your life takes on resonance and purpose. You define success in a way that has meaning and vibrancy for you. You may even start having more fun! Tyler grew up believing he wanted to be a Fire Fighter. His Uncle, a Fire Fighter and a local hero, got a lot of attention. Tyler’s eyes lit up whenever he saw his Uncle, just like most other people in the town. Tyler wanted to be just like him, and when asked “What are you going to be when you grow up?” he would say “a Fire Fighter!” This response got lots of positive reinforcement from adults.

What Makes You Happy?

Professional Services"Success is getting what you want, happiness is wanting what you get." ~ Dave Gardner "The purpose of life is the expansion of happiness." ~ Maharishi Mahesh Yogi "I've learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our dispositions and not on our circumstances." ~ Martha Washington. As human beings, our goal is to find that which makes us happy. We are brought up to believe that happiness lies in achieving things. With this belief in place, we go after careers, possessions, bank balances and soon find out that the joy of getting there is trapped in the ‘doings’ of maintaining the status quo. We get pulled in 40 directions at once by the expectations of others and current responsibilities. Many successful people end up having all the comforts of life and still feel empty, stressed out and alone at the core of their being. What is missing?

Home Security (Choosing A Safe)

Professional Services (By Brett Mikkelson) Upon purchasing a safe, there are several general things that you should account for to ensure you are buying the right one for your needs. Security is obviously the first and foremost point that you need to take into consideration. There are safes to hold documents, (fire resistant for 1-2 hours), and there are three levels of theft prevention safes as well (high, medium and low). There are simple residential safes that are made with solid iron with electronic or mechanical locks. They offer a low level of security for intruders, but a high level of security for house-based employees; these are not fire resistant whatsoever. These are not easy to open in a non-violent manner and are resistant to simple manual tools such as hammers and chisels depending on the quality of the safe. There are fire resistant safes with a thin plate of metal which creates a mold that is filled with a low density material against fire. They are however vulnerable to simple manual tools such simply because the plate of metal is so thin. These safes provide a low level of security against intruders, a medium level of security against house-based employees and a medium level of security against fires. http://bminvestigations.com/article.php?story=20060314171429241
